Among the French departments most affected by Covid cases, Hérault and its 201 cases per 100,000 inhabitants are preparing for the return of health restrictions such as the wearing of compulsory masks or the establishment of a curfew.

"The curfew is a weapon in the hands of the prefects, if the situation gets out of hand," Clément Beaune, Secretary of State for European Affairs, warned on Monday at BFMTV.

While the Pyrénées-Orientales have already adopted the return to wearing a mandatory mask outdoors, the Hérault should follow unless there is a miraculous turnaround.

"If the situation continues to deteriorate we will take measures, always proportionate, because freedom must remain the rule and restrictions are exceptions," said Hugues Moutouh at the microphone of France Bleu Hérault.

Occitanie, and more generally the departments of the South of France, are currently the most affected by the Covid epidemic according to the incidence rates published on Monday, July 19, 2021. This can be explained in particular by the fact that these are tourist places where the epidemic circulated less during the year, and therefore regions where the population is less immune.
