The vocalist and violinist of the American rock band Kansas Robert E. 'Robby' Steinhardt has died at the age of 71, as reported by the band through its Twitter account.

"The members of the KANSAS band, past and present, wish to express

our deepest sorrow at the death of our bandmate

and friend, Robby Steinhardt," they posted.

Dust in the Wind

,

Point of No Return

and

Carry on Wayward Son

, were three of his greatest hits that he voiced in Kansas.

In 2006 he retired from the rock band and was currently working alone, preparing a national tour for the end of the year.

Steinhardt was originally a member of another Topeka progressive rock band called White Clover, which eventually became Kansas' first lineup in 1973, Rockfm released after his death.

That original group also included

Steve Walsh

,

Rich Williams,

and

Kerry Livgren

, who featured on the 1974 Kansas debut album.

In 1982, Steinhardt left the band and formed Steinhardt-Moon in Florida, before rejoining Kansas in 1997. After nearly another decade of touring, Steinhardt retired from the band in 2006, but did not leave music entirely.

At the time of his death, he was working on a solo album with producer Michael Franklin, which

brought together a cast of stars and famous musicians

to support 'Robby' Steinhardt's return to the stage, his family has said.
