• Victims of their tourist attractiveness, the four coastal departments of Nouvelle-Aquitaine - Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes, Gironde and Charente-Maritime - are seeing their incidence rates increase.

  • The 15-45 year old category is the most represented in this wave of contamination.

  • Health authorities are calling for vaccination to improve vaccination coverage and preserve the hospital system.

If during the previous waves of the Covid 19 epidemic, Nouvelle-Aquitaine was one of the least affected regions, the tourist attraction that it shares with Occitanie and PACA places it in the front line for the beginnings of this fourth wave.

In Charente-Maritime, where wearing a mask has been made compulsory outdoors in several sectors, the incidence rate is 170 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in Gironde 133, in the Landes 123 and finally 112 in the Pyrenees -Atlantic.

"The incidence rate is calculated on residents so it does not take into account tourists who come to be tested, points out Laurent Filleul, epidemiologist and head of the regional unit of Public Health France in New Aquitaine, so we underestimate reality.

"If the increase in this indicator is not a surprise, the epidemiologist specifies that the health authorities did not expect such a" sudden "increase.

“For the moment, we are not recording hospital overactivity, but we must remain vigilant.

There are still people who are frail, elderly or carriers of chronic diseases who are not vaccinated, ”argues Laurent Filleul.

"The 15-45 years" in the viewfinder

For this epidemiologist, deconfinement, the mixing of populations during the holidays and the progression of the delta variant help to explain this situation. “People are on vacation, partying and protecting themselves less, which promotes the spread of the virus,” he explains. The 15-45 year olds largely contribute to the increase in the incidence rate in these departments. “During the summer of 2020, we also witnessed an upsurge in clusters linked to festive evenings, but this time the delta variant is more contagious. “And, a very contagious virus has a higher probability of encountering fragile people,” he adds. However, based on the English experience, we know that the appearance of this delta variant did not increase the number of serious forms and critical care hospitalizations.

Our dossier on anti-

Nouvelle-Aquitaine has one of the best vaccine coverage in the country with 61% of people having received a dose and 48.5% twice vaccinated.

However, collective immunity, which is above 70%, has not yet been reached.

The health authorities are calling for more scrupulous respect for barrier gestures and are planning vaccination campaigns, targeting the most vulnerable in particular.
