The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 1183 new coronavirus cases within one day.

That is 537 more than on Tuesday a week ago, when 646 new infections were reported.

The seven-day incidence continues to rise to 10.9 from 10.3 the previous day.

The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been proven to have been infected with the coronavirus in the past seven days.

The highest seven-day incidence was reported in Berlin (18.0), followed by Hamburg (14.4) and Hesse (14.3).

The value is lowest in Saxony-Anhalt (3.2), Saxony (3.5) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (3.7).

34 other people died related to the virus.

This increases the number of reported deaths to 91,397 within 24 hours.

In total, more than 3.7 million corona tests have so far been positive in Germany.

In view of the rapidly increasing number of infections, World Medical President Frank Ulrich Montgomery warned against opening too quickly. Even the smaller opening steps in the past few weeks would have increased the incidence values, Montgomery told the Funke media group. The number of infected people is currently doubling every week. "Now to simply drop the restrictions on our contacts and 'open everything' would be extremely dangerous," said the doctor. "If you do that, you risk entering the fourth wave." Instead, Montgomery advocates a gradual and controlled approach.
