After the crash of a small plane at the Renneritz airfield in Saxony-Anhalt, the death toll has increased to four.

As the police announced on Monday, a young person from North Rhine-Westphalia died in the hospital from her serious injuries in the morning.

According to initial investigations, the single-engine aircraft crashed on Sunday afternoon at the airfield shortly after take-off.

The machine with four people on board caught fire.

The cause is unclear.

The 55-year-old pilot from Saxony, a male youth and a female youth from North Rhine-Westphalia died at the scene of the accident.

Another young person, also from North Rhine-Westphalia, was seriously injured and rescued from the aircraft wreck and taken to hospital.

The 16-year-old succumbed to her injuries on Monday morning, a police spokesman said.

Nobody survived from the machine.

There is great sadness and horror at the misfortune.

The events are not easy to process, it will take a long time and will always be remembered, said a spokesman for a glider club for the dpa.

“Four dead, young people, it's all incredible,” he said.

The deep sympathy applies above all to the relatives.

The grief can hardly be put into words.

When the accident happened, hobby pilots from various flight clubs from all over Germany met at an air camp in Renneritz on Sunday.

The pilot of the small airplane and the three young people from North Rhine-Westphalia also took part.

The 55-year-old from Saxony had previously been to the airfield in Saxony-Anhalt, where there are such air camps in the summer.

At the time of the crash, around 25 participants were on the area.

"All young people" were sitting in the plane, said the spokesman for the glider club.

It is a terrible misfortune.

There has never been anything like it in the long history of the club.

He knew the pilot, said the spokesman.

"He was a nice, good guy," he said in a tear-choked voice.

Experts from the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation looked with the help of the local police for the cause of the accident, a police spokesman said. According to the information, the wreck of the single-engine machine of Polish design was secured. It was initially unclear which type it was exactly. The Dessau-Roßlau police department also asked witnesses who had seen something in connection with the accident to report.
