Peter in Venice An old friendship
Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar will inaugurate the 78th Venice Film Festival with his latest film,
Parallel Mothers
, with which he will compete for the Golden Lion, the organizers of the contest announced today, which will be held between September 1 and 11. "I was born as a director in Venice in 1983 in the Mezzogiorno Mezzanotte section and, 38 years later, I was chosen to open the Mostra. I cannot express
the joy, the honor of what this represents
for me without falling into self-pity", says the filmmaker.
Almodóvar made his debut in the Venetian competition that year with
Entre tinieblas;
in 1983 he presented
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
, which won the Best Screenplay award;
in 2019 he received the honorary Golden Lion;
and last year, in the edition of the pandemic, he returned to premiere his short
The Human Voice
, starring Tilda Swinton.
The cast of
Parallel Mothers
includes
Penelope Cruz, Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde
, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and with the participation of two of their "girls", Julieta Serrano and Rossy De Palma.
The director of the Venetian festival,
Alberto Barbera
, thanked Pedro Almodóvar for "the privilege" of being able to open the Mostra with his latest creation, "an intense and sensitive portrait of two women who confront the themes of an unpredictable motherhood".
But it also covers topics such as "female solidarity, a sexuality lived in full freedom and without hypocrisy, with a reflection on the inescapable need for the truth in the background, to continue without doubting," says Barbera.
The Mostra, the oldest international competition in the world and one of the most prestigious, intends to return this year in style after last year's edition, very limited and without stars due to the pandemic, although it could finally be held, something that could not do Cannes, for example.
While waiting for the show to be unveiled later this month, it is known that the International Jury that will assign the awards will be chaired by Korean director Bong Joon-ho, author of the acclaimed "Parasite" (2019).
On the other hand, the honorary Golden Lions will go to the Italian filmmaker and actor Roberto Benigni, father of "La vita è bella" (1997), and to the American actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
In addition, one of the highlights of the Mostra will be the premiere of "Dune", the adaptation of Denis Villeneuve's science fiction classic, starring Timothée Chalamet, REbecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Javier Bardem.
