Covid-19 contaminations continue to climb rapidly, going back above the 10,000 mark this Friday under the effect of the Delta variant, while hospitalizations were still down slightly, according to figures from Public Health France.
10,908 people tested positive for the virus in 24 hours, with however a catch-up effect of the July 14 holiday, when fewer tests were carried out.
But over the last 7 days, cases of contamination have almost doubled, amounting to nearly 40,562, against 23,039 the previous seven days.
6,971 hospitalized patients
The threshold of 10,000 new daily cases had not been crossed since the end of May.
The highly contagious Delta variant is responsible for almost all of these new cases in France today.
Hospitals had 6,971 patients (7,054 as of Thursday), of whom 220 were admitted in the past 24 hours.
This number of hospitalizations has thus returned for the first time since the beginning of October below the 7,000 mark, but the decline that began at the end of April has slowed down for several days.
The critical care services, in charge of the most serious cases, recorded a slight decrease, with 899 patients against 914 the day before and 33 new admissions.
22 dead in 24 hours
The disease has killed 22 people in 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 111,480 since the start of the epidemic in March 2020.
Since the start of the vaccination campaign, 37,119,805 people have received at least one injection (or 55.1% of the total population) and 29,781,387 people are now fully vaccinated, or 44.2% of the total population.
