In last year's census, the number of people per household in Tokyo fell below two for the first time to 1.95.

According to the preliminary figures of the census conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications as of October 1, last year, the number of people per household in Tokyo was 1.95.



The number decreased by 0.07 from the previous survey five years ago.



It is the first time that the number of people has fallen below two since the census began 101 years ago in 1918.



The number of people per household has continued to decrease since it first reached the 3-person level in the 1960 survey, and was in the 2-person range for the 40 years leading up to the previous survey.



Aogashima Village has the lowest number of people by ward, city, town, and village with 1.43 people, followed by Shinjuku Ward with 1.57 people, and Shibuya Ward and Toshima Ward with 1.64 people.



The city says, "In Tokyo, the proportion of elderly people living alone is increasing due to the aging of the population, which seems to be behind the decrease in the number of household members."



On the other hand, the population of the city is 14,064,696, which is about 550,000 from the previous time, an increase of more than 4%.



In addition, the number of households is 7,219,402, an increase of more than 510,000 from the previous time.
