Almost all - 96% - of the French who contracted Covid-19 with symptoms last week were not vaccinated, said the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, on Thursday during an express visit to the vaccinodrome in Chambéry (Savoie).

Almost all of them were infected with the particularly contagious Delta variant, added the minister.

These figures, he said, will henceforth be provided every week "in full transparency" to the population.

"When you are vaccinated, you are therefore at least four times less likely to catch the Covid", assured Olivier Véran.

Asked about the demonstrations organized against the health pass, he first relativized the movement, given the small number of demonstrators, before admitting to having "a little difficulty in understanding them".

A "commitment" for caregivers

The Minister of Health was also little worried about the opposition of some caregivers threatening to resign, because of the obligation to be vaccinated: "When you choose to wear the gown, it's a commitment Which involves getting vaccinated.

"The vaccine obligation already exists in the law", he also recalled.

A significant drop in appointment bookings had been observed in recent weeks, but, since Emmanuel Macron's announcements on Monday evening, 4,000 additional appointment requests compared to the average have been recorded for the only vaccination center of Chambery.

At the national level, Olivier Véran estimated at 3 million the number of appointments made since the intervention of the President of the Republic.

Thursday afternoon, during a trip to the Hautes-Pyrénées, the Head of State welcomed "the awareness" of the French.
