At least eleven people in India were struck by lightning and died while taking a selfie.

In the storm during the monsoon season, mainly in northern India, 58 other people were also struck by lightning and died, as a police spokesman told the German press agency on Monday.

The eleven people who died while taking selfies stayed despite the heavy storm with heavy rain on a watchtower of the Amber Fort from the 12th century in the state of Rajasthan, the spokesman said.

Some other people were also on the building at the time on Sunday - and some jumped down.

There were particularly many storm victims in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The 42 people were mostly people from farming families or homeless people who were also outdoors during the storm.

Violent storms with lightning strikes are common in India during the monsoon season from June to September.

According to the weather forecast, there will be more storms in the coming days.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised compensation to the families of the dead and injured.
