Patronage Law New false start
Uribes "I should not encourage or recommend going to the bulls"
Indecision in the Uribes pandemic irritates the cultural industry
The government crisis unleashed by Pedro Sánchez has also taken José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes (Valencia, 1968) ahead for the benefit of Miquel Iceta, who will be the new head of the portfolio, the fourth in the last three years of socialist governments after Máximo Huerta, José Guirao and Uribes himself.
The change from Rodríguez Uribes to José Guirao seemed inexplicable, and predicted something disturbing: a cultural manager with 40 years of experience in the Administration was leaving to make way for a politician, a friend of someone.
With Culture (with some exceptions) the same thing always happens: it is a
reward
and projection
chamber
to give an outline to people who hardly ever reappear in the fields of culture.
Uribes, we must also admit, you had the most complex time in the sector since democracy came into operation in Spain.
It could have given
symptoms of imagination
, of knowledge of the environment, of resolution capacity.
But it could not be.
The pandemic, which cut off a large part of the cultural industries, also left the minister of the sector shrunken like a bonsai.
The
aid package that it promoted to stimulate the sector
when it most needed it, 76 million euros, was insufficient. And from then on, Uribes has moved between unpredictability and disaffection in most of the areas that his ministry encompasses. Keeping theaters and cinemas open with the motto of 'Safe Culture' didn't do much good. Not good yet. Efficiency measures were lacking. In addition to some little
tricks
that spoiled the conduct of the ministry. It should be noted that
of the 75 measures of the Artist's Statute, only five have been developed
. And it has not yet convened the interministerial meeting that it had been proposing since last December.
With a lot of noise from spotlights and photos, Rodríguez Uribes' ministry announced the rental agreement reached with Tita Cervera so that her collection would be kept in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, but the
loose ends
can still fight because the matter is not sealed from the everything.
Uribes has also been the taxpayer in a new attempt to renew the patronage law for culture.
In his first speech before the Culture Commission of Congress, Rodríguez Uribes referred very marginally to the project in a fringe of his speech.
Later, it was a parliamentary initiative that put the matter back on the political agenda.
The Government, according to the opposition, has dedicated itself to making the statue before one of the great challenges of the sector.
There was more: Uribes spoke with disdain of the bulls, which is one of the sectors that were under his tutelage, but then he did nothing, for or against an art whose future is uncertain. He was also the last minister to speak to the public during the tough months of the confinement and the one who said the least of all in an appearance full of trifles that
irritated representatives of the cultural industries.
Then, summer came, and the Minister of Culture had the task of accompanying the kings on their tour of post-pandemic Spain. Not a big deal.
And Iceta?
Iceta is another professional politician, trained in Moncloa in the last years of the felipismo and hardened in the PSC in the perpetual crisis of the Procés.
The son of a Basque nationalist family that settled in Barcelona after the war, his ideological origin is in the Popular Socialist Party of Enrique Tierno Galván,
an old university community and almost centrist
that came to the PSOE in the times of the Transition and to which assumes a certain intellectual prestige.
He has never had responsibility in cultural matters.
The time has been (and is) turbulent and unstable.
It was time for managers and not for newcomers.
