The tallest sand castle in the world was built in the northwestern tip of Denmark, with a length of more than 21 meters and a weight of about 5,000 tons, its designers announced yesterday.

The richly decorated sandstone palace is 21.16 meters high, more than three meters higher than a palace built in Germany in 2019 and still holds the Guinness World Record for 17.66 metres.

The new palace, in the seaside resort of Blokhaus at the northern tip of the Jutland peninsula, was built in the shape of a pyramid to prevent collapse, a common method used by experts on this fragile construction.

And the palace designer, Dutch Wilfried Steicher, who was assisted by 30 of the best sand sculptors in the world, wanted to embody through the palace the power of the Corona virus on the world since the beginning of the epidemic.

Announcing his work, Steicher said, the virus "runs our world, tells us what to do, and prevents us from being around our family and friends."

A total of 4,860 tons of Danish sand were used in the construction of the palace, and it was possible to build it thanks to the wooden structure inside it.

In order to ensure greater cohesion and greater adhesion, clay was mixed with sand at a ratio of about 10%, and glue was applied upon completion so that the building would withstand most of the winter on this windswept coast.

A model of the Corona virus was placed at the top of the castle, crushing the people crawling below, who are doing their best to defeat it, according to the artist.

The palace's designers expected it to hold out until a strong frost in February or March would bring it down.

Sand construction has become a tradition in Blokhos, and the sculptures usually continue into January, when winter begins.
