It's the big comeback of the Cannes Film Festival.

After its cancellation in 2020 due to Covid-19, the stars will be able to go up the famous steps from this Tuesday to attend the screening of

Annette

by Leos Carax, a filmmaker as cult as rare.

"The Covid is still there, but being present for the return of the festival, in the opening film (...) is a great feeling of relief and excitement," said Adam Driver, headliner with Marion Cotillard of this unclassifiable musical, and the French director's first film since

Holy Motors

nine years ago.

An excitement shared by the gratin of world cinema, who is returning to the Croisette after being shaken by the pandemic and the months of cinema closures, more than two years after the Palme d'Or awarded to South Korean Bong Joon-ho for

Parasite

.

Presentation of the Palme d'Or on July 17

The members of the jury, who arrived in Cannes and met Monday evening around a first dinner, will give their traditional press conference Tuesday afternoon, before starting their cinephile marathon: 24 films in official competition to see, from the young Julia Ducournau to Paul Verhoeven via the Italian Nanni Moretti or the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov, and prizes to be awarded on July 17.

The president of the jury, Spike Lee, the first black artist in this post, will undoubtedly say a little more about how he intends to take on this role. Militant New York filmmaker, committed against racism and for diversity, a hot topic in the cinema industry today, he was appointed last year, before the cancellation. A majority female jury surrounds him, including the star of French song Mylène Farmer, the Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, or the star actor of Korean cinema Song Kang-ho.

From the end of the afternoon on Tuesday, make way for glamor and flashes on the red carpet, unrolled a few hours earlier.

If the entrance to the festival is subject to the presentation of a health pass, and the mask required even outside, on the steps, the artistic teams will have the right to withdraw it.

The spotlight will be on American actress and director Jodie Foster, 58, guest of honor at the opening ceremony and who will kick off the 74th festival.

The actress at the two Oscars, interpreter of classics such as

Taxi Driver

(1976) or

The Silence of the lambs

(1991), must be awarded a Palme d'Or of honor for her career.
