A few days ago, Liu Shuyong, a well-known Hong Kong historian, and his party visited Pan Uk in Yuen Long, Hong Kong.

In November 1938, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, Ye Jianying, came to Hong Kong to recuperate. He also visited the Pan House in Yuen Long to meet with Pan Junmian, the owner of the Pan House.

It was under the influence of Ye Jianying that Pan Junmian enthusiastically organized Hong Kong business community donations to support the War of Resistance. At the same time, through Ye Jianying's relationship, he mobilized his two nephews (they) to join the Eighth Route Army to fight in the Mainland.

[Commentary] Liu Shuyong has long devoted himself to the study of Hong Kong history, including the history of the Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong.

In his view, the principles and policies of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government towards Hong Kong have profound historical origins.

As early as the period of the Agrarian Revolution, the main leaders of the Chinese Communist Party had visited Hong Kong and used Hong Kong to carry out revolutionary work. They already had an understanding of the special role of Hong Kong.

Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and Ye Jianying all visited Hong Kong in their early years, which shows that the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party have all been to Hong Kong in their early years.

They have personally experienced the situation in Hong Kong and the special status of Hong Kong.

We believe that their experience had a considerable influence on the later they presided over or participated in the formulation of the Chinese Communist Party’s policy on Hong Kong.

[Explanation] In 1982, Liu Shuyong entered the Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences after graduating from graduate school in 1982, and has been engaged in the study of Hong Kong history for many years.

In his work, he found that Hong Kong has never had a local history from the British occupation period to the handover.

After retiring, Liu Shuyong is committed to promoting the compilation of Hong Kong local chronicles.

In 2005, Liu Shuyong was invited to the Lingnan University of Hong Kong to study Hong Kong history and to help promote the compilation of local chronicles. In 2019, he served as a consultant for the Hong Kong Local History Center.

With the support of many parties, the first volume of "Hong Kong Chronicles", one of the editors in chief, was officially published at the end of 2020.

In recent years, we have found a large number of historical documents, and we have also done a lot of field investigations and field investigations to further explore the history of the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Brigade in the War of Resistance, and we have proposed the establishment of three anti-Japanese cultural relics, namely the Sha Tau Kok Anti-Japanese Cultural Relic Proposals for the construction of the Anti-Japanese War Memorial Trail, Sai Kung Anti-Japanese War Heritage Trail, Lantau Anti-Japanese War Heritage Trail, and the establishment of the Hong Kong Sha Tau Kok War Memorial Museum.

[Explanation] Since 2017, Liu Shuyong has worked with people from all walks of life and social groups in Hong Kong to conduct research and field visits, and initially drafted three anti-Japanese cultural relic paths, including many historical sites related to the anti-Japanese war in Hong Kong.

Liu Shuyong said that the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade of Dongjiang Column, the anti-Japanese guerrilla group led by the Communist Party of China, was the only armed force that was formed during the three years and eight months of the fall of Hong Kong and persisted in the War of Resistance from beginning to end.

The compilation of the local chronicles of Hong Kong, including the history of the Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong, has the function of "preserving history, providing management and educating people".

It is hoped that the citizens of Hong Kong can pass on the patriotic spirit by learning from the patriotic spirit of their predecessors who dedicate themselves bravely for the country and the nation. This is one aspect.

Another aspect is that Hong Kong citizens, through the historical record of the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership of Hong Kong citizens’ resistance to war, can have a more comprehensive and positive understanding of the Chinese Communist Party’s contribution to the development of Hong Kong’s society, the defense of the country, and the subsequent development of Hong Kong’s economy. The positive and positive effects of this.
