For an initially unexplained cause, a large fire broke out off the coast of the South Caucasus Republic of Azerbaijan not far from a natural gas field in the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijani civil protection denied reports on Sunday evening that an explosion had occurred on an offshore platform.
There was no accident there.
Experts are currently investigating the cause of the fire, it said.
People had previously posted videos of the giant flames on social networks.
Some media then reported that there could have been an explosion on an offshore platform.
