All place-name signs in the community of Gunningen in Baden-Württemberg were stolen over the weekend.

The signs had been stolen from all streets, said a police spokesman on Monday.

The background and the perpetrators are so far unclear.

The damage amounts to around 600 euros.

From the town hall it was said that place signs had been stolen last year. “I don't know why,” said administrative employee Angelika Scheel. "I really can not imagine why someone does something like that." Until the road maintenance department of the district put up new place-name signs, Tempo 50 signs would be put up at the town entrances so that nobody drives into town too quickly, said Scheel. "Hopefully the new signs will stay longer than the old ones."
