Imprisoned for not being able to repay a bank loan

“Arif” needs 300,000 dirhams to return to his family

An inmate in Sharjah Central Prison has been suffering for nearly a year and nine months, not being able to repay a bank loan of 300,000 dirhams.

The Al-Faraj Fund had made a settlement with the creditor (the bank), in which the original value of the amount was reduced from 700,000 dirhams to 300,000 dirhams, but its current financial situation prevents it from securing any part of the required amount.

"Arif" told "Emirates Today" that he was an employee in a government agency, and that he had to borrow 400,000 dirhams from the bank, to help him secure the costs of marriage, buy a car, and pay the rent of the house, in addition to securing some life necessities.

He added that the value of the loan amounted to 700,000 dirhams due to the calculation of interest, but he suffered from several chronic diseases, which forced him to submit his resignation, because the nature of his work did not suit his health condition, he said.

He confirmed that he tried to find another job that suits his health condition, but he was unsuccessful in that.

He continued, "During this time, the bank decided to resort to the judiciary, which landed me in prison, due to my inability to pay the required monthly installments, as well as my failure to pay them for months."

He continued: “I do not know what to do under the circumstances I am going through now, and I do not find a way to pay the amount due to me. I addressed the (Faraj Fund), and they cooperated with me and understood my problem and communicated with the bank, and agreed to reduce the amount to 300 thousand dirhams, but I do not know.” How will I act under the circumstances I am going through, knowing that I have a family of four, and they are currently going through difficult living conditions, I appeal to good people and people of compassionate hearts to help me pay the required amount and overcome the circumstances my family is going through.”
