  • Coronavirus Diabetes: the new side effect of Covid?

It is estimated that, in Spain,

6% of the general population suffers from diabetes, a

percentage that rises to 15% in those over 60 years of age. Indeed, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is one of the four main non-communicable diseases (along with cardiovascular diseases, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases), and

causes more than one and a half million deaths each year in the world.

It can also be the origin of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks or leg amputations.

Of the three types of diabetes that exist (type 1, type 2, and gestational), the second is the most common.

Also called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes, in type 2 diabetes the abnormal rise in blood sugar is caused by the body not using the insulin it produces effectively.

It is caused mainly by excess weight and lack of physical activity and, although in the past, it was only seen in adults,

today it is increasingly diagnosed in children and adolescents.

It usually goes unnoticed

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes (increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination, involuntary weight loss, fatigue ...) are usually not very obvious compared to the other two types and, for this reason, can go unnoticed for a long time.

Its diagnosis is made through a blood test

,

being confirmed when glucose markers are equal to or greater than 126 mg / dl on two occasions.

Between 110 and 125 glucose levels would be abnormal, and below 109 would be considered normal.

Meeting on type 2 diabetes

On Friday 9 of this month Javier Escalada, president of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition, and Ana Belén Torrijos, president of the Federation of Diabetes Associations of the Community of Madrid, will talk about type 2 diabetes and resolve the doubts of the readers from the world.

You can leave your questions in the comments of this news.

Cases of diabetes have increased considerably in recent years, especially in less developed countries, and it

is estimated that it will be the seventh leading cause of death in the world in 2030.

To avoid that the forecasts are met, it is necessary to know that

diabetes type 2 can be prevented.

How?

With a healthy lifestyle.

Obesity and abdominal fat, key factors

Although it is also known as adult-onset diabetes, in recent years there have been

increases in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in young people.

Reversing this change requires, mainly, a reduction in the intake of simple sugars and saturated fats, and an increase in the practice of physical exercise.

  • A healthy and varied diet, such as the Mediterranean, is key in the prevention of diabetes.

Obesity and abdominal fat are important causes of the disease,

so, in addition to food, attention should be paid to the way food is cooked (avoid fried foods).

Simple carbohydrates should be substituted for complex ones, and the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables should be consumed daily, avoiding saturated fats.

  • It is also key to avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

    The recommendation is to perform

between 30 and 40 minutes of exercise, especially aerobic, on a daily basis.

You can rest some day, but weekly you should reach 150 minutes.
