A Ford Escort that belonged to Princess Diana was sold at a British auction on Tuesday for a South American museum.

Princess Diana got the gray car as an engagement gift from Prince Charles in May 1981, two months before their wedding in July.

On the roof of the car is a drawing of a silver frog, in a copy of the emblem given to the princess by her sister Sarah, and Diana kept it when she sold the car.

Princess Diana stopped using the car shortly after she gave birth to Prince William in 1982, and an amateur collector bought it for £6000.

Since the beginning of this century, this car has been owned by a fan of the royal family, who has rarely driven it, and has never revealed its story to his friends.

The car, which still bears the same registration number and original color, and has a mileage of 83,000 miles (133,000 km), was sold at auction by Ryman Dancy in Colchester, eastern England.

Its price reached 52,640 pounds (about 73,000 dollars), including taxes and commissions.

The estimated value of the car ranged from £30,000 to £40,000.

Lewis Rabbit of the auction house explained that the buyer is an unidentified South American museum, noting that the car will be transported to the winning site.
