In Senegal, a large part of the population lives on animal husbandry.

However, this activity is characterized by limited water resources, deep water tables and a short rainy season.

We must add the degradation of natural resources.

This prompted the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Productions to favor the policy of pastoral units.

Publicity

A pastoral unit is above all a steering and animation tool available to the communities.

It is a geographical space centered on a borehole where people live exploiting the same resources and using the same water points (whether ponds, pastoral wells, or boreholes).

A major concern in the silvopastoral zone is transhumance.

We must therefore agree on the passageways, and equip these transhumance routes.

The establishment of a pastoral unit must obey certain standards.

First the request must come from the beneficiaries or the implementation must be done with their consent.

Then plan training-awareness sessions for all stakeholders, first of all the farmers in the villages.

Thirdly, plan and promote a way of managing pastoral unity.
