, Angelina Jolie wanted to draw attention to a recurring problem in medical training.

She interviewed Malone Mukwende, a 21-year-old medical student living in London.

The young man denounces a problematic bias: the teaching of medicine is based on studies carried out on white individuals.

However, dermatologically, certain symptoms present themselves differently depending on the color of the skin.

This gap therefore increases the risk of false diagnoses, putting people of color at risk of complications.

The problem, but also the solution

But if Angelina Jolie wanted to give Malone Mukwende a platform, it is because he did more than identify the problem.

The student has just launched a manual as well as a platform called Black & Brown Skin intended to provide resources for recognizing symptoms on black or brown skin.

As he states on his website, Malone Mukwende hopes his initiative will lead to better diagnoses and "increase patient satisfaction and caregiver confidence when treating people of color."
