America: a historic heat wave sweeps the northwest regions

A historic heat wave swept the Pacific Northwest regions of the United States, where temperatures rose sharply Saturday, as local officials warned residents to take precautions, while electric companies asked users to limit consumption.

The National Weather Service said excessive heat was issued in Washington, Oregon and parts of Idaho, Wyoming and California, with temperatures soaring 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above average across the region over the weekend and into next week.

"This wave is likely to be one of the most intense and longest heat waves in the recorded history of the interior region of the northwest," the authority added.

Dozens of daily record temperatures are expected to be recorded across the region.
