“Dior” turned the page on stone and virtual fashion shows, and restored freedom of movement by presenting it recently in front of hundreds of people on the marble stands of the Olympic and archaeological stadium in Athens, a collection of fashion that combines “elegance” and “flexibility”, which was a “return to the roots” of Greek culture and heritage. .

"Cruise 2022", one of the independent shows of Fashion Weeks, was held amid a charming output of music and light effects, interspersed with huge fireworks, in front of an audience presented by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and actress Catherine Deneuve, and the collection of the French house of elegant clothes delicately combined "the power of heritage and innovation contemporary.”

The models walked through the Panathinaiko Stadium in pure chiffon outfits, pleated or pleated, with gilded fringes or blue Greek embroidery.

"A fashion show is like a concert and a theatrical work, and the guests are part of the show," said Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director of Dior's women's collections.

After the pandemic eliminated the spectators from the Dior shows, the house chose for the return of the public this archaeological landmark, which underwent renovation on the occasion of the first Olympic Games in the modern era in 1896.

The show began with pictures of a historical photo session at the archaeological site of the Acropolis in 1951, of Haute Couture dresses designed by Christian Dior himself.

Maria Grazia Chiuri said the show was "like a celebration of a memory".

"We are very proud to be here," added the Italian designer, who dreamed of returning "Dior" to Greece after 70 years.

The Greek peplum, a traditional sleeveless garment that hangs at the shoulder worn by the ancient Greeks, was the inspiration for this collection and a symbol of "returning to the roots".

ancient statues

The French house stressed that the peplum, which evokes "ancient statues", is "more than ever a symbol of freedom", as it "covers and frees the body" at the same time, highlighting its "curves and movements".

The peplum was previously the focus of the "Dior" collection for haute couture 2020, but in Athens the audience watched a show in which costumes inspired by the peplum danced, combining traditional character and modern characteristics, between elegance and flexible sportswear and not limited to rigid molds, "leaving the body its freedom." Which is what everyone needs at this stage, according to Maria Grazia Chiuri, who added that these costumes allow movement” as well, “hence the idea of holding the show in an Olympic stadium.”

She pointed out that "the shoes also reflect this idea of freedom", as there are no heels in them, but only rubber and sports shoes that appear under the evening dresses.

The Italian designer collaborated in the implementation of this collection with a number of Greek craft institutions, by combining, for example, clothing with embroidery or jacquard and trimmings.

Chiuri stressed the importance of "discovering the handicrafts of this region, which allow for another creativity."

From the collaboration between Dior and the Greek craft institutions supported by the Benaki Museum, a sailor's hat was also born that suddenly appeared during the show.

In the next few days, Dior will use a number of other major archaeological sites in Greece to take pictures, including Herodes Atticus's landmark at the foot of the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon near Athens, and the Temple of Zeus in Nemea.
