The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the latest outbreak of the Ebola virus in Guinea, West Africa, to be over.

It was "an honor" for him to be able to declare the end of the disease, said WHO representative Alfred Ki-Zerbo on Saturday at a ceremony in the area of Nzérékoré in southeast Guinea, where the disease broke out in late January.

In West Africa, around 11,000 people died from the Ebola virus between 2013 and 2016.

Ebola sufferers suffer from fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, internal bleeding and ultimately organ failure.

Transmission occurs through direct contact with the body fluids of an infected person.

The greatest risk is for people who care for Ebola sufferers.

The authorities reacted quickly to the latest Ebola outbreak in Guinea with 16 confirmed cases and at least twelve deaths.

Among other things, a vaccination campaign was started with the help of the WHO.
