In 2020, 66,683 deaths were recorded in the Madrid region.

This is 41.2% more than the previous year, according to a press release from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) which does not specify the causes of these deaths.

The Coronavirus could however explain this increase, the Spanish capital, populated by 6.7 million inhabitants, having been the epicenter of the pandemic in Spain.

The Madrid region, which represents 14.3% of the Spanish population but recorded around 20% of the total Covid-related deaths in the country, suffered greatly during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. The health catastrophe had led the regional authorities to install a mortuary in an ice rink and to set up a field hospital in the exhibition center.

80,000 deaths from Covid (officially) in Spain

Nationwide, the number of deaths rose 17.7% to 492,930, 74,227 more than in 2019. This figure is the largest recorded in the country since the start of the statistical series in 1941, according to INE.

According to the official report of the Ministry of Health, around 50,000 deaths due to the coronavirus were recorded in Spain in 2020. But this figure is largely underestimated while the number of victims could not be tested due to the saturation of the system health.

In total, more than 80,000 people have officially died from Covid-19 in Spain, one of the most affected countries in Europe.

But contaminations and deaths have dropped drastically in recent weeks due to the progress of the vaccination program.

28% of the 47 million Spaniards are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
