June 14th is World Blood Donor Day.

Since the promulgation and implementation of the "Blood Donation Law" in 1998, the blood donation rate per 1,000 population in China has exceeded 10‰.

Among these blood donation volunteers, there are many people who insist on donating blood all the year round, and donate blood that weighs dozens of times their own body weight.

How do they achieve this "achievement"?

Actually, it has something to do with the way they donate blood...

[1] How did you donate so much blood?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

Our country has regulations, each donation of blood is not allowed to exceed 400ml.

Why (can) accumulate so much?

In fact, the concepts he said are different, one is whole blood and the other is component blood.

According to the National Blood Donation Law, whole blood can only be donated twice a year; the interval between the first and second donations of blood components should be more than two weeks, so we can donate blood twice a month.

That refers to the blood donation of components, so you can donate 24 times a year.

  [2] What is blood component?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

Component blood refers to platelets in our clinic.

Because our blood is mainly composed of blood cells and plasma, what red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and other different components are covered in blood cells.

Each component in the blood has a different function to the human body.

[3] Why is the blood donation cycle shorter for component blood?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

Because the growth cycle of our blood cells is different, the growth and maturity cycle of our red blood cells is about 120 days, which is about less than half a year, so the white blood cells may take about two weeks, and the platelets may be shorter.

Why does the blood component refer to the platelets? It takes two weeks (interval) for donation, because the platelets return to normal in two weeks.

[4] What is the use of blood components?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

There are many kinds of blood diseases in us.

Depending on the condition, it sometimes lacks platelets, has thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, and so on.

[5] What conditions are met to donate blood?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

We talk about blood donation in principle. The big principle is that there are no major infectious diseases. There is no long-term persuasive medicine, high blood pressure and other genetic diseases. In principle, it is fine, but there are many details, and the age is 18 to 55 The weight is 90 jin for girls and 100 jin for boys. This is the standard for donating blood.

[6] Where can I donate blood components?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

In fact, we collect blood components through an extracorporeal circulation separator, which is separated according to the specific gravity and volume of the cells, so it takes a little longer.

If you want to donate blood components, you need to go to a special department, such as a blood center, and some special blood donation rooms.

[7] Is donating so many blood components harmful to the body?

[Concurrent] Liang Yongqing, Director of Beijing Red Cross Donation Service Center

I have not heard of any adverse effects on the body.

As I just said, the recovery of blood cells is also a cycle. Why can he donate blood frequently because he has returned to normal levels.
