A gambling-addicted nun in California is said to have embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to pay for casino visits and other personal expenses.

According to the Los Angeles Attorney's Office, the 79-year-old woman was charged with money laundering and fraud these weeks.

Accordingly, she confessed to having put more than $ 835,000 in her own pocket.

The long-time principal of a Catholic elementary school in the Californian city of Torrance embezzled school and donation money and forged account books for over ten years.

The deficit was not noticed until much later on review.

The nun who once took a vow of poverty is now retired.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the woman claimed to have used the stolen money to pay for “large amounts of gambling” and credit card debts.

According to her lawyers, the nun wants to fully cooperate with the authorities, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

You regret what you did.

The lawyers said the woman had helped others all her life but later developed psychological problems that clouded her judgment.

On July 1, the 79-year-old woman has to appear again in court. According to the prosecution, the two offenses could be imprisoned for a maximum of 40 years.
