This is the first local case in Hong Kong with a variant virus strain N501Y.

  On June 5, a new confirmed case in Hong Kong was a local case of unknown origin, involving a 17-year-old female student living with her family in Shengyu House, Block P, Tin Shing Court, Tin Shui Wai, and an old student at Queen Elizabeth School, Tin Shui Wai Huitang Guohua Middle School went to school. The last school day was June 2. She developed symptoms such as sore throat and cough on the same day. She sought medical treatment the next day and was diagnosed afterwards.

  Zhang Zhujun, director of the Infectious Diseases Division of the Center for Health Protection of the Department of Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, said that the female student had a low CT value (that is, a high viral load), and was verified to have a variant virus strain N501Y.

Zhang Zhujun revealed that the female student went to the Wan Chai Convention and Exhibition Center to participate in the 27th Hong Kong International Education Fair with her mother on May 29. She stayed for about 1 hour and then went to Mong Kok for shopping and eating.

In addition, she went to Tuen Mun for tuition on many Sunday mornings in May.

  The building where the female student lives has been subjected to forced inspection on the evening of the 4th. All people in the restricted area have been subjected to mandatory inspection as required, and there are about 850 people.

Lin Wenjian, director of the Centre for Health Protection, said that the operation has been completed and no confirmed cases have been found.

However, residents of the building will be subject to mandatory testing again on the 3rd, 7th, 12th and 19th day from the day the patient was diagnosed.

  Lin Wenjian said that so far, 274 confirmed cases have been found in Hong Kong with a variant virus strain, of which 273 are imported cases or related cases. In other words, the female student became the first case of unknown local origin with a variant virus N501Y. He emphasized that the SAR government must adopt the highest level of prevention and control measures.

  At present, a total of about 100 close contacts have been sent to the quarantine center and will be quarantined for up to 21 days. All the places visited by the female student during the incubation period will be included in the mandatory testing announcement.

  Zhang Zhujun also added that there are less than 10 initially confirmed cases, including the female student’s mother, who is a housewife.

  Li Liye, Chief Administrative Manager (Comprehensive Clinical Services) of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, announced that as of 9 am, in the past 24 hours, 5 more confirmed patients have recovered and been discharged. So far, a total of 11583 confirmed and 1 suspected patients have recovered and discharged.
