The fire that hit the Fiber Excellence pulp mill in Saint-Gaudens on Saturday 15 May, classified as high threshold Seveso, is relegated to the rank of closed incidents.

Two weeks to the day after the disaster, Etienne Guyot, the prefect of Haute-Garonne, has just authorized the site, which employs 260 people, to resume its activity.

"It was found that the operator carried out the work and provided the necessary justifications", explains the representative of the State after a new inspection of the installations on Friday.

“Fiber Excellence also carried out, during this forced shutdown, major sealing work on the bottom of the boiler,” he adds.

Molten sodium

The fire was caused by a loss of tightness of the site black liquor boiler and caused the flow of molten sodium, requiring a strong mobilization of specialized teams of firefighters.

The prefecture now ensures that the consequences of this incident, which worried the residents, "have proved to be limited".
