Sergio de Lope is an Andalusian artist who plays the transverse flute and the saxophone "with a flamenco accent".
The mystique of flamenco jazz:
Ser de luz
is their second album, a bet
"on all kinds of music. It is quite popular
. All the compositions are mine. The previous album,
A night in Utrera
, respects more the canons of flamenco jazz".
The two genres lead to
Jorge Pardo
, Sergio de Lope's reference since he started playing solo in 2013. "When talking about the canons of flamenco jazz, I mean that he
used the typical jazz harmonies with the flamenco rhythms
" .
To describe
Ser de luz, he
says that it is "evolved flamenco", the usual loop.
The contribution of flamenco to music, how to intuit flamenco in each new song, if there is a connection point between everything that is
proposed
or what need is there to pervert purity to attract the public;
the classic roundabouts.
"When talking about the evolution of flamenco, I mean that each artist has to do what he feels.
Evolution and tradition do not exist without each other, they are contradictory and symbiotic
. They have to be both", says Sergio de Lope, who places the beginning of flamenco jazz in the 70s "by the hand of Paco de Lucía. It is true that it is not for large audiences. I
consider that it is very versatile.
It can be programmed in a flamenco festival, in a jazz festival, in a world music festival or
indie
festivals
. Because flamenco is
indie
", he warns.
"What is more widespread within the music industry is pop and indie rock" and he believes that a change is underway now.
An exodus from some platitudes.
"There are more and more flamingos on festival posters
, like Israel Fernández or Diego del Morao, or groups like Califato 3/4. And it will spread much more".
He is grateful that "the melon" was opened by Rosalía.
"His first album was flamenco in his own way. Then he has done it very well."
Do you believe in cultural appropriation?
"No. Art belongs to everyone. It is true that there are very geographically localized root expressions, but if someone from abroad comes, a Japanese, for example, to play flamenco and embroider it, well what are we going to do.
Music is a catalyst of feelings and that's it ".
Have Andalusians appropriated flamenco? "Obviously, it was born in Andalusia. It spreads thanks to commercial routes
. Madrid is one of the key places of flamenco
. Like Cartagena. But the beginnings of flamenco occur in Andalusia. It is the factory. Then there are different schools, such as sound Caño Roto or the Mina neighborhood in Barcelona ".
On his website he writes that at the age of 16 he began to play the flute in a self-taught way. "From flamenco," he says,
"I like Paco de Lucía and Enrique Morente
. From jazz,
Miles Davis
and
Chick Corea
." He assumes that he is not a "great improviser" and that if he enters some festivals "it is because of flamenco, not because of jazz. There is a high level of jazz flautists.
Where Spain is truly competitive abroad is in the world. flamenco
. There's no need to be ashamed. Flamenco is what we do best ".
The attempt to mix "two languages" defines it as an "alchemy"
. "I approach others from the respect. Your concerns make you go to other places. Those elements are mixed in the test tube and then you have to see if people like it."
After passing through Seville or Córdoba, he now lives in Granada with his family. "I already have two children. I have complied with society," he jokes. The pandemic has made him evolve:
"It has been a complicated year. Accepting it has been the most difficult.
Accepting this situation is screwed up. I believe that culture is a basic commodity and nothing has been done to defend it. Then it has been seen that there is no outbreak related to the shows. However, politicians have continued to cancel the medium cultural events ", that is, the habitat in which it moves.
Being of light
was going to come out "last year."
He decided to postpone it.
"
Now the atmosphere is much calmer. Everything is more open now
. The light is seen a little more", conjugates the title of the album from the Berlin café.
"The atmosphere in Madrid is always different. It has nothing to do with other places."
