Those who died never left.

They are in the lightening shadow and in the thickening shadow.

The dead are not underground.

They are in the quivering tree, they are in the moaning wood, they are in the flowing water, they are in the sleeping water, they are in the cellar, they are in the crowd.

The dead are not dead.

These lines, taken from "Les souffles", one of the most famous poems of the African continent, are those of the Senegalese writer Birago Diop.
