Sunglasses are a summer staple.

It acts as a shield against harmful UV rays and adds the final elegance to the look.

The German optician, Sarah Koster, explained that the appropriate sunglasses should provide adequate protection for the eye from harmful UV rays, which can be inferred through the UV 400 mark on the arm of the glasses or the phrase "100 protection from ultraviolet rays".

Coaster added that the color of the lenses is not evidence that the glasses provide eye protection from UV rays.

Where there are transparent lenses that provide protection from the harmful rays of the sun.

Dark-colored lenses without UV protection can also harm eyes.

Because the pupil expands in the dark, then a greater amount of harmful rays passes into the eye.

Protection filters

For her part, German optometrist Peggy Kleindienst indicated that the sunglasses contain the following protective filters:

Sun protection filters: They protect against absolute dazzling due to intense sunlight.

- Special filters: They absorb part of the short-wave visible light field. They are used for certain eye diseases.

Polarizing filters: They reduce reflections from shiny surfaces such as water and minerals.

Blue light filters: They are used while working in front of a computer screen to absorb the blue light emitted from the screen in order to reduce eye strain.

Colored lenses

Coaster also indicated that the colored lenses work to limit the amount of light entering the eye, so that one can see well without the need to narrow his eyes during sunshine or when practicing water or winter sports.

The degree of coloring is divided into five classes;

Class 0 allows 80 to 100% light penetration, while extremely dark (Class 4) lenses only allow 3 to 8% of light transmission.

Very dark lenses are suitable for mountain tours, for example, but not suitable for driving a car.

• Tinted lenses reduce the amount of light entering the eye.
