Carle wrote and illustrated over 70 children's books, but is best known for the children's book "The very hungry caterpillar".

It was first released in 1969 and is about a voracious caterpillar that eats its way through apples, pears, cakes and sausages, to then become a cocoon and eventually develop into a beautiful butterfly.

The book is only 224 words long but has become a classic that has sold over 30 million copies and been translated into 62 languages.

When Carle was interviewed by the BBC in 2019, he explained what he thought was the reason why the book is still engaging after five decades:

-For many years, neither I, my publisher nor my publisher understood why it is so popular. But over time, I have felt that the book is about hope, it is a book about hope. And it is this hopeful feeling that has made it a book that readers of all ages can appreciate and remember, he said.
