[Commentary] On the morning of May 26, the farewell ceremony of Wu Mengchao's remains was held in the lobby of Longhua Funeral Home in Shanghai.

At the ceremony, mourning was accepted by the masses. Academician Wu Mengchao's fellow friends, students, and former patients came to bid farewell to Mr. Wu spontaneously.

Despite the drizzle in Shanghai that day, hundreds of people had gathered in front of the funeral home early in the morning to see off.

Everyone took flowers in hand and followed the street signs to enter the venue in an orderly manner.

Wang Renhua, a Shanghai citizen, has been engaged in the placement of help and education for many years, and he once found Lao Wu for medical treatment of prisoners on parole. What Wu said at the time has kept her in mind.

When I started to help and teach (work) in 1998, (the prisoner) he was not ill. In 2010, he had liver and ascites, so he was released for medical treatment.

Later, people blamed me, how did you cause trouble to a prisoner, Mr. Wu.

Elder Wu said that the prisoner is also a human being, and he also has the right to live, so I always remember this sentence.

[Explanation] As the "father of Chinese hepatobiliary surgery" Wu Mengchao, "Peaches and plums are all over the world", many of his former students came to bid farewell to Mr. Wu that day, and Yu Buwei, president of the Anesthesiologists Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association was one of them .

He revealed that he first met Mr. Wu in 1975 and was admitted to a doctoral degree in 1986. Mr. Wu, as a tutor at the time, gave him a lot of help in his studies.

He commented that Mr. Wu was “strict and not strict”. For young people who showed a love for learning, Mr. Wu was very willing to provide them with opportunities.

Mr. Wu is truly a great medical expert. He is not just being a small place for himself, he is willing to help everything related to his subjects.

Especially when young people show that you are willing to study and study hard, he will provide you with opportunities.

Therefore, I feel that I have benefited from Elder Wu, and he recruited me into his door to have today. Therefore, I feel even more that the departure of our teacher is an eternal pain in our hearts.

However, on the other hand, I think Mr. Wu’s life’s achievements, whether it is saving so many patients’ lives, so many families, or the business he started, and so many students, are enough to make me feel that Mr. Wu has nothing. Regrettably, I even left this world with great pride.

[Explanation] In the opinion of Dr. Li from the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, Mr. Wu's teachings and the spirit of his doctors have given great encouragement and encouragement to many juniors who are engaged in surgery.

She was shocked when she heard the news of Wu Lao's death, and came to Longhua Funeral Home on a special leave that day, hoping to send Wu Lao one last time.

I once thought of giving up (learning medicine) countless times, but he (Old Wu) said that only inexhaustible love can illuminate the suffering souls.

What he left us is the "three hearts", we need to be enthusiastic, loving and patient. I think this is a place worth learning for every surgeon, including every student, whether studying medicine or other aspects. .

(I) think that all those who study hepatobiliary surgery, or even surgery, should be his students.

[Explanation] Wu Mengchao is the pioneer and main founder of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery and a well-known international expert in Hepatobiliary Surgery. He is known as the "Father of Hepatobiliary Surgery in China."

Wu Mengchao died of illness at the age of 99 in Shanghai at 13:02 on May 22, 2021.
