The reporter learned from the Publicity Department of the Yuxi Municipal Party Committee on the 26th that these 15 Asian elephants have now successfully entered Eshan County, Yuxi City and continue to migrate northward.
This is the first time that Asian elephants have entered Eshan County since monitoring.
China's Asian elephants are mainly distributed in Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Pu'er City and Lincang City, Yunnan Province, with a population of about 300.
The rare "broken nose family" elephant herd that migrated northward originally lived in the Mengyangzi Reserve, a National Nature Reserve in Xishuangbanna Prefecture.
In December 2020, this elephant herd became the first Asian elephant to visit Mojiang County, Pu'er City, and was active near the Xinfu area; in April 2021, they went northward and entered Yuanjiang County, Yuxi City for food. The local said it was an Asian elephant since monitoring. They entered Yuanjiang County for the first time; on May 16, 2021, they continued to migrate northward and appeared in Shiping County, Honghe Prefecture. The reporter learned that every place this elephant herd went to, there were monitoring personnel to follow up and issue warnings at all times to remind nearby villagers to evacuate.
During their stay in Shiping County, Honghe Prefecture, the elephant group passed through many villages in Baoxiu Town and Longwu Town, with sufficient food and stable mood.
In order to do well in advance for the protection of Asian elephants and the management of accident prevention, Eshan County issued an emergency plan ahead of time, and organized relevant departments to arrive at the scene as soon as possible to monitor, evacuate and publicize the prevention and protection measures of nearby village groups.
