The story of Patrice Lumumba is the edifying testimony of the disappointed hopes of the African continent, that of a comet charged with hope, and of ideals which will be crushed in the six months which followed his speech of independence.

Executed with the blessing of the West, he was replaced by Mobutu, whose absolute power would last for nearly thirty years.
