In Reunion, the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise stopped on Monday around 2 a.m. (midnight in Paris).

The volcano erupted on Friday April 9, for the first time this year.

"Following the stopping of the volcanic tremor (synonymous with the arrival of magma near the surface) no recovery was observed (...) the eruption therefore stopped", indicated the Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF).

The prefect announced Monday in the middle of the afternoon the passage "in phase of safeguarding of the specific device Orsec of the volcano", thus signifying the end of the eruption.

A safe rash

The eruptive phenomenon took place in the enclosure, the central caldera of the volcano.

The area is completely uninhabited and the eruption presented no danger to people or property.

However, it arouses a lot of curiosity among the inhabitants of the island, which led the prefect to take measures to discourage walkers, in the midst of the Covid epidemic.

In mid-April, two young hikers were found dead near the Piton de la Fournaise, victims of heat and toxic gases from an eruptive cone of the volcano.

Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, has erupted around 20 times over the past ten years, and woke up three times in 2020.
