In Cyprus, an investigation was opened after the death of a 39-year-old British national, victim of a "serious thrombotic episode" after having received on May 6 a first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine against covid-19, Cypriot agency CNA reported on Monday.

The victim, whose identity has not been revealed, had been hospitalized in an intensive care unit at Nicosia General Hospital.

She was suffering from symptoms related to the formation of a blood clot.

Four cases of blood clots

The Cypriot authorities have opened an investigation to determine whether the "serious thrombotic incident" from which she died was linked to her vaccination. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will also conduct its own investigation, said Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the Cypriot health services organization. In total, authorities on the island are currently investigating four cases of blood clots, three in patients who received a first injection of AstraZeneca vaccine and one from Pfizer.

The product from AstraZeneca's laboratory is at the heart of the vaccination campaign in Cyprus, which has not yet placed any restrictions on its use.

In total, 49% of the adult Cypriot population has already received a first dose of coronavirus vaccine and 21% are fully vaccinated.

The Mediterranean island, which has less than a million inhabitants, has officially recorded 71,911 contaminations and 354 deaths since March 2020.
