For most ECOWAS member countries i.e. Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo, food security is serious business.
To cope, the various governments have set up food security storage facilities.
Publicity
We now know the reasons for this situation: climatic hazards, primarily with rainfall;
locust attacks;
declining agricultural yields;
population growth ;
insecurity caused by terrorism, political crises and interethnic conflicts, with displacement of populations.
In addition, a significant portion of urban and rural populations depend on the market for their food supply, with soaring local, regional and international prices.
