Emilie Mazoyer receives Tuesday in her program "Music!"

the authors of the book 101 Film Songs Alain Pozzuoli and Philippe Sisbane.

They explain to his microphone how some original film scores have become famous, despite the failure of the film for which they were originally composed.

INTERVIEW

Friends first

, by Georges Brasses,

Strangers in the night

, by Franck Sinatra ... We do not know that these hits were composed for films.

And for good reason, feature films have been commercial failures.

Yet without them you would never have been able to hum some of your favorite songs.

This is explained, among others, by the authors of the book

101 songs from films

Alain Pozzuoli and Philippe Sisbane, at the microphone of Emilie Mazoyer in the program

Musique!

>> Find Music!

every day from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Europe 1 as well as in replay and podcast here

Friends first

of Georges Brassens

The first example chosen by Alain Pozzuoli and Philippe Sisbane is that of Georges Brassens' song

Les copains first

, original music for Yves Robert's film

Les copains.

 "This

is not what he has done most successful, "say the two authors modestly." It's a very precious film, a little fancy, but with a bunch of actors who are doomed to become very, very well known . "In particular Michael Lonsdale, Philippe Noiret or Guy Bedos.

This is one of the rare occasions when Georges Brassens, a free spirit par excellence, has agreed to compose to measure.

"He agreed to adapt to the film and compose this song precisely according to the script," add the authors of

101 film songs

.

Georges Brassens' song is "sausage" here and there in the film.

"He had a hard time singing it right and they had a lot of trouble getting a recording where Brassens was singing right. We were amazed to find out this information," reveal the two moviegoers.

The film is not a success but the song by Georges Brassens is put back in a single piece to be released on disc.

"It's one of those examples where the song begins to live a life of its own, independent of the film from which it came. And, one day, we are amazed to learn that it came from a film" , analyze Alain Pozzuoli and Philippe Sisbane.

Strangers in the night

by Frank Sinatra

"It is taken from a movie that nobody has ever seen since it was a total flop called

D for danger."

It is without great care for the film by Ronald Neame and Cliff Owen released in 1966 that the two authors follow up with another example, that of

Strangers in the night

 by Frank Sinatra.

A title composed especially for this spy comedy.

"However, there are famous actors in it. There is Melina Mercouri, it was not nothing at the time," they recall.

"But what stands out from the film is only the song. This film did not mark anybody, but the song became an international hit."

Tino Rossi's

Little Father Christmas

"No one knows

Destins

de Richard Pottier, a 1946 film. However, in this film, there is the song which has become the best-selling single in France since 1946:

Petit papa Noël

, by Tino Rossi", take as a last example the authors of

101 movie songs

.

The song exists as early as 1944. "It was then a child's prayer to say to Santa Claus, 'Instead of giving me toys, bring my father back who is a prisoner in Germany.' In 1946, when the film is filmed, the director is released by the group of New York singers who were to make a gospel. And he remembered this song, "detail the two moviegoers. "He had the lyrics changed to remove all allusions to the Occupation and it became the best-selling record in France."

Alain Pozzuoli and Philippe Sisbane's book also shows other dynamics between films and film music. It is thanks to the generational comedy

Breakfast club

that the group Simple Minds finally manages to reach the top of the charts with their song

Don't you (forget about me)

. "Sometimes the influence is reciprocal," add the two authors. For example,

The winner

publicized the music of Simon and Garfunkel, which made the film known in return. "
