Washing your hair daily, is it good or bad?

That is the question that transcends

fashions, trends and generations.

Raise your hand who has never asked a close friend or family member -or has been asked by-, that of: "And you,

how often do you wash your hair?".

In my family, of course, whether washing your hair every day is

beneficial or detrimental

to the health and appearance of the hair was, and is, a primary concern.

When I was a child, my mother practiced

weekly hair cleaning with me,

just like she did herself - in the 'go to the hairdresser' version - perhaps because we both had extremely dry, dense and coarse hair, and by then she He argued that those tufts of hair were less dirty than greasy manes, and that they

dehydrated less

the less they were shampooed.

The trend must have had some kind of base because today my hairdresser recommends that

I do not exceed

the frequency of washing, because my hair

does not need it.

Other hair, on the other hand, may have the imperative need to shampoo daily.

Is there a correct frequency?

"Your hair doesn't need you to wash it daily."

We emphasize this phrase because it

has its crumb

and it seems a truism truth, when instead the whole truth is in it:

'my' hair, it is not 'your' hair,

nor that of your mother or your best friend.

Each mane is a world.

But let's take a step back.

The always burning question of how often to wash our hair is surrounded by false myths: that if

more oil

comes out

if you use shampoo often;

if it

falls more

every time it is washed;

if you get dehydrated by cleaning it daily ...

For Dr. Ricardo Ruiz, from the

International Dermatological Clinic of Madrid, an

expert in skin and also

in hair,

there are two

fake news

about this topic that stand out above the others: that washing your hair frequently

makes it fall more

and that the less you wash it, the

less fat you will have.

False and widespread

myths both.

The dermatologist

Andrea Combalia tells us

that when it comes to how often to wash your hair, you have to flee, as in everything,

from the extremes:

"An excessive cleaning

eliminates the natural protective barrier,

but a little one interferes with the health of the scalp; the grease secreted by the sebaceous glands of the scalp is

necessary for capillary health,

but sebum is also the main culprit for

hair getting dirty,

as it attracts dust,

dirt, polluting particles ... ".

Thus, as we started this section,

"hair must be washed when requested,"

insists hairdresser

Diana Daureo.

For me it can be every four days and for you, daily.

It depends on the life you lead, if you practice sports frequently, if you live in highly polluted environments ... It

all depends.

On the other hand, Daureo points out: "The frequency of washing does not depend so much on the

type of hair,

whether it is dry, dyed, straight, curly ... The time between washes varies depending on

the amount of fat

that our scalp gives off" .

The hairdresser speaks of an ideal frequency of

two or three times a week.

"But if we are facing an oily scalp, it will be necessary to wash

daily or every two days,"

says the pharmacist

Rocío Escalante, from Arbosana Farmacia.

Shampoo, and modus operandi, matter

What is essential, more than the frequency of washing, is to choose the shampoo that best adapts to three factors, according to Diana Daureo:

  • The

    scalp

  • The

    type of hair.

  • The

    state of the hair

    at each particular moment.

The

pH of the shampoo

is not a trivial matter either.

"The skin of the scalp

is oily, slightly more acidic

than the rest of the body; a very alkaline pH damages the scalp, opens

the cuticles,

increases the negative charges of the hair and favors frizz", explains Andrea Combalia.

If you wash your hair daily, in addition,

Kooch Green Cosmetics

recommends doing it with a

mild shampoo,

for frequent use, and, ideally, sulfate-free.

As they do not contain detergents, they tend to

dry out less.

Finally, and before diving into a

selection of shampoos

for all needs, let's solve another burning question:

how many shampoos do you

have to give in each wash?

"One if we wash daily,

two if we do it two or three times a week," suggests Rocío Escalante.
