While the terraces of bars and restaurants reopen on Wednesday, questions remain about the risk of coronavirus contamination outdoors.

Yoan, auditor of Europe 1, wonders if he risks contracting the disease during a meal with friends, through food or postilions.

Doctor Jimmy Mohamed answers him in the program "Sans Rendez-vous".

DECRYPTION

It is the big day for a hotel and catering sector ravaged by endless months of closure: the terraces of bars and restaurants reopen Wednesday with a drastic health protocol, in an attempt to ensure deconfinement without a strong resumption of the coronavirus epidemic.

In this context, should we fear contamination outdoors during meals with family or drinks with friends?

This is the question that Yoan, auditor of Europe 1, asks Jimmy Mohamed, doctor and columnist of Sans Rendez-vous.

Yoan's question

With the upcoming opening of the terraces, I still wonder if it is not dangerous to go to a restaurant, already because we get closer to other people, but also because the cooks do not necessarily test PCR.

I wanted to ask you if the Covid goes through the food and if we could be contaminated outside?

Jimmy Mohamed's response

At present, there is no evidence of contamination of the coronavirus through the digestive tract through food.

We will again worry about the head of transmission linked to the cook, but we did not ask ourselves this kind of question for the butcher, the fishmonger, the grocer, the market gardener.

For now, there is no cause for concern.

The cook must obviously wash his hands, these are the basic rules of hygiene.

Professionals will wear the mask and wash their hands.

And then, little by little, we will be vaccinated.

Food contamination is virtually zero, if not nonexistent at present.

What about the risk of contracting the Covid on the terrace despite everything, outdoors?

This risk is close to zero, again.

We must not forget that it is in closed environments that we fall ill.

There is no outdoor cluster.

If you look at the probability of getting sick, it is almost twenty times greater outdoors than indoors, according to the Japanese Ministry of Health.

It is believed to be less than 10% of transmissions.

When you are dining outside, you have plenty of air.

If anyone ever gets sick, the virus particles will quickly be diluted and therefore the risk of aerosol contamination is close to zero.

On the other hand, it is possible that your neighbor is throwing spilts or small droplets that can make you sick.

This is the reason why we will all need to be vaccinated so that we can eat a little more serenely.

What are the benefits of this reunion on the terrace?

Many studies have shown that people who are going to be socially involved, what we are going to do.

We're going to meet again, we're going to be with family, friends, we're going to share a meal.

It does us good and we realized that it decreases the risk of dying of depression and that it limits cardiovascular disease.

More generally, we know that people who will suffer from isolation are twice as likely to have cardiovascular diseases. In a way, with the Covid which is about to end, when we will find ourselves on a terrace, we will break the isolation and it will do us good. That's why we are all so happy to participate in a meal. It's good for the heart since you will synthesize less cortisol and less adrenaline. Ultimately, it will be beneficial for your health.
