Seoul ... high impact of Viagra in wastewater

Highly concentrated effects of Viagra and the drugs used to treat ED were discovered in sewage in Seoul, South Korean researchers said.

Experts studied the presence of chemicals in the entry and exit streams of the two sewage treatment plants in the South Korean capital, as well as in the facilities that receive the water.

The research indicated that existing wastewater treatment plants "are not able to handle" the quantities of waste chemicals.

The paper said, "Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors present in household wastewater were hardly treated by the plants, and in the end, they were discharged into the aquatic environment."

Studies have shown that about 23% of young South Korean males suffer from sexual dysfunction, and the total sales of drugs containing phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors to the top 20 Korean pharmaceutical companies amounted to $ 133 million in 2019.
