After a cannibalistic and sexually motivated violent crime in Berlin, the alleged perpetrator has been charged with murder.

The 41-year-old was accused of killing a man of about the same age in his apartment about eight months ago at a meeting agreed on via a dating portal, the public prosecutor in the capital announced on Tuesday.

Then he cut up the body and distributed body parts in the city.

"The indictment is based on a sadistic-cannibalistic sexual motivation," the authority explained.

The Berlin district court now has to decide on the admission of the indictment and the opening of the main hearing against the accused.

How long this will take is still unclear.

The crime was discovered in November after human bones were found in the Pankow district.

Investigations showed that it was parts of the body of a 43-year-old from Berlin who had been missing for several weeks.

Elaborate further investigations, including the evaluation of the dead person's cell phone data, then led to the suspect's apartment.

There, police officers found blood, other body parts and suspicious tools, among other things.

According to the reconstruction of the investigators, the two men met online on September 6 via a dating portal and met on the same day.

The later victim took a taxi to the suspect's home.

This then killed his visitor "to satisfy the sexual instinct," said the public prosecutor.

There are no indications that the victim may have consented to his killing.

The accused was arrested immediately after his home was searched and is in custody.

He had deposited parts of his victim in various places in the Pankow area.

One was found days after his arrest.
