It took almost fifty years for “Thérèse und Isabelle” to appear in France in its original form, and another twenty for the German translation of the uncensored version: In this novel, actually the first part of a novel, Violette Leduc tells the love story of two boarding school students.
The narrow book, around 160 pages long, describes a few days and nights with astonishing physical and linguistic intensity.
Amazingly, not only in the fifties, when the book, read enthusiastically by Simone de Beauvoir, could not have appeared.
