Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) urges caution when easing the measures against the corona pandemic.

"Together we seem to succeed in breaking the third wave," said Spahn in a letter published on Saturday to the health ministers of the federal states.

But the number of infections is still too high.

If too much is loosened too quickly and caution is waned, there would be enormous risks for the number of infections to rise again sharply.

If the number of infections continues to fall, more and more restrictions in all areas of life could gradually be relaxed and lifted, the minister wrote. At the same time he warned: "What must be avoided is a political race to relax, especially in the election year." The basis for gradual openings is "intensive testing in all living environments," said the minister.

Spahn was confident that increasing vaccination rates could significantly reduce the incidence of infections.

In the meantime, over a third of Germans have been vaccinated at least once, and ten percent have complete vaccination protection.

"These numbers will continue to rise significantly in June and July," said the minister.

At the beginning of the summer, every second German will have been vaccinated at least once, and more than one in five will have complete vaccination protection.
