With the relaxation of numerous corona restrictions, Greece opened the holiday season on Friday.

"We leave the dark clouds of fear and uncertainty behind us," said Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis on Thursday evening in front of the ancient Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sunion and announced the official restart for tourism in his country.

Italy, meanwhile, announced the end of quarantine for visitors from the EU, Great Britain and Israel.

The Greek travel season was almost completely canceled last year due to the corona pandemic.

On the island of Crete, 15 flights were expected on Friday alone, and a further 24 on Saturday - most of them from Germany.

In total, the Greek islands expected around 150 international flights on the two days.

In Crete, German tourists already enjoyed the sun and the turquoise blue sea on Friday.

“The restaurants are open, we can go to the beach, we can enjoy the good weather, we can go shopping.

It's wonderful to be able to go out again, ”said a delighted Caroline Falk, a 28-year-old flight attendant.

There is no quarantine for tourists, said her friend, giving the reason why they decided to vacation in Greece.

Although the authorities continue to register more than 2000 new infections per day and the hospitals are busy, all schools were allowed to reopen on Monday.
