He is one of the main founders of the literary movement of negritude.

Author, playwright, essayist, he achieved a poetic revolution with the publication of

Cahier d'un retour au pays natal, 

published in 1939, in which he denounced racism and colonialism in a long poem.

Member of Parliament and mayor, he simultaneously leads a political career and takes part in African independence.
