The number of letters and postcards handled by Japan Post last year decreased by 6% compared to the previous year, the largest drop in the last 20 years.

According to Japan Post, the number of letters handled in FY2020 was 7.7 billion, a decrease of 2.6%, and the number of postcards was 5.1 billion, a decrease of 11.2%.

Including other mail items, the total number of mails was 15.2 billion, a decrease of 6.8% from the previous year, the largest decline in the last 20 years.

The main reason for this is that the number of events has decreased due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, and the number of mail items sent by companies for advertising has decreased.

On the other hand, the number of Yu-Packs increased by 11.9% to more than 1 billion due to the use of online shopping in response to so-called nesting demand, the highest number ever.

Japan Post said, "The stagnation of corporate activities has spurred a decrease in letters and postcards. Future trends will depend on how much corporate activities will recover."
