At least 25 people were killed in a police operation in a favela in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro.

The victims are 24 suspects and a police officer, as the news portal "G1" reported on Thursday, citing the police.

Two passengers on the metro, which passes near the Jacarezinho favela, were shot in a subway car and survived, according to the report.

Other people were therefore slightly injured.

The Jacarezinho favela is one of the bases of the “Comando Vermelho” (Red Command) in northern Rio, which it protects with barricades, among other things.

Powerful criminal syndicates such as the "Comando Vermelho" and a number of smaller gangs are wrestling in the slums to control drug trafficking and protection money.

Residents, including a bride and a pregnant woman, were unable to leave their homes in the face of fierce gunfire and explosions.

One clinic had to remain closed.

According to the Fogo Cruzado (Crossfire) app, which has been collecting data on armed violence since 2016, it is the police operation with the most deaths in a Rios favela since the survey began.

In July, the Supreme Court in Brasília suspended police operations in favelas during the corona pandemic. These are only allowed in "absolute exceptional cases".
